How Often Should Servers Be Replaced?

A server shouldn't be replaced simply because it reached a certain birthday, but waiting until critical hardware fails can turn a planned infrastructure project into an expensive emergency.

Many organizations plan physical server lifecycles around several years of service, often aligning replacement planning with manufacturer warranty, operating system support, workload requirements, and business risk. There is no universal replacement age. A well-supported server may remain appropriate longer, while a critical out-of-warranty server with aging storage or unsupported software may warrant replacement sooner.

Having a backup and having a recovery plan are not the same thing.

Some workloads remain local while others move to cloud services, balancing local requirements with cloud flexibility.

The right question isn't 'server or cloud?' It is 'where should each workload live?'

Cloud is not automatically cheaper, safer, or better. Some applications require local hardware. Some are already SaaS-based. Some sit best in a hybrid arrangement. The right answer depends on where each workload should live.

Do we even need a server anymore?

Some small businesses historically used servers for functions that can now be handled through cloud services. But not every business should eliminate its server.
