Managed IT

The business enters an ongoing relationship with an MSP that continuously manages an agreed-upon portion of the technology environment, provides support, and proactively works to maintain, secure, and improve that environment.

The biggest difference is the incentive

This is the part that matters most, and it is not about attacking break/fix providers. It is about how each model aligns incentives.

In a traditional break/fix relationship, the provider earns revenue when technical work is required. That is not malicious; it is simply how the model works.

In a well-structured managed-services relationship, both the customer and the MSP benefit when the environment remains stable, secure, and supportable. The provider is rewarded for preventing problems, not for fixing them.

How the cost models differ

Break/fix can appear less expensive because businesses only pay when they request service. A quiet month costs almost nothing. Managed IT, by contrast, creates a recurring operating expense that shows up every month whether or not anything breaks.

But the other side matters too. Break/fix expenses can be unpredictable. One month may cost almost nothing while another could include emergency labor, extended downtime, or a major project. Managed IT generally trades some of that variability for a more predictable recurring technology expense.

Neither model is inherently cheaper. The real question is total cost and total risk over time, including the cost of problems that proactive management might have prevented.
