School IT Support for Stuart, Port St. Lucie and Martin County Campuses

IT, student data security, and device programs for private, charter, and faith-based schools on the Treasure Coast.

School IT support keeps student and staff accounts secure, devices ready for class, and campus Wi-Fi reliable, while protecting education records the way FERPA and Florida law expect. For Treasure Coast private and charter schools, that means managed accounts with MFA for staff, MDM for 1:1 student devices, vetted classroom apps, tested backups, and a summer refresh plan.

This page is general information, not legal advice. Your school and its counsel decide how FERPA and Florida law apply to you.

What student data rules affect a school's IT?

Several federal and Florida rules touch how student information is stored, shared, and deleted. IT is where most of them become real.

FERPA (20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) protects education records at schools that receive U.S. Department of Education funds. A school can treat an outside IT provider as a “school official” with a legitimate educational interest when the provider does work the school would otherwise do and stays under the school's direct control for how records are used. Whether that applies depends on your school's FERPA policy and your written agreement. Many private schools take no federal funds, so FERPA may not apply directly, but most follow it as the standard.

COPPA covers online services used by children under 13. It mostly falls on app operators, and schools are often asked to consent on parents' behalf for school use.

CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act) requires covered schools to have an internet safety policy and content filtering for students. We put the filtering and logging in place where your school needs it.

Florida law. Section 1002.22 sets out student records rights. Section 1006.1494, the Student Online Personal Information Protection Act, expects operators of K-12 sites and apps to collect only what they need, keep reasonable security, and delete covered information when the district asks after a student leaves. State Board Rule 6A-1.09550 requires school districts and charter school governing boards to review and approve required online services and notify parents. That rule names districts and charter governing boards, not private schools.

How do you protect student and staff data day to day?

Most school data problems start with a staff email account, a shared login, or a classroom app nobody vetted.

  • Staff accounts with MFA, separate admin accounts, and student accounts with age-appropriate settings in Google Workspace for Education or Microsoft 365 Education. We help with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace administration, and you can read why MFA is important.
  • Role-based access to the student information system, grades, health, IEP and 504 records, and counseling notes, so the front office, teachers, and nurses each see what their role needs.
  • A simple process to vet new classroom apps against their privacy terms before teachers adopt them, with an approved-app list. For charter schools, this supports the review Rule 6A-1.09550 describes.
  • Email security and staff training, with a focus on payroll diversion and tuition payment scams. Learn how they work in What is business email compromise?
  • Backups of cloud email, drives, and any on-site server, with tested restores, through our backup and disaster recovery service.
  • Clean offboarding when staff leave mid-year, and graduating or withdrawing students' accounts handled under your retention policy.

Running a 1:1 device program without the chaos

A 1:1 program works when every device is enrolled, filtered, and tracked from the day it is handed out. We run MDM (mobile device management) for school fleets:

  • MDM for Chromebooks, iPads, or Windows laptops, with zero-touch or bulk enrollment, settings and apps pushed centrally, and lost mode with remote lock.
  • Content filtering on and off campus where your school requires it, including CIPA-style filtering when your policies call for it.
  • An inventory of which student or teacher has which device, plus a repair, loaner, and insurance workflow.
  • Charging carts, classroom displays, printers, and device readiness before state testing windows.
  • Staff devices managed separately from student devices.

Campus Wi-Fi and safety systems

Classroom Wi-Fi has to handle every student device at once, and network upgrades need a clear plan so class stays online.

  • Wireless designed for classroom density, gyms, and portables, through our network infrastructure work.
  • Network separation so student, staff, guest, camera, and building systems each stay on their own segment.
  • Cameras, door access, and visitor management kept apart from student data. See security cameras and access control.
  • Phones and paging where you use them, through business VoIP.

Summer refresh and the school calendar

The summer break is the one window to replace, re-image, and rewire without disrupting class.

A workable calendar looks like this: inventory and budget in March and April, orders placed by May, and hands-on work from the last day of school until the first teacher planning day in early to mid August. Summer work usually includes:

  • Device collection, repair, and re-imaging
  • Account cleanup and rollover for the new year
  • Wi-Fi and switch upgrades
  • Server and firewall maintenance, plus backup tests

Before teachers return, a back-to-school readiness check confirms devices are enrolled, new staff accounts have MFA, new students are rostered, and filters are verified. During the year we help with new hires, broken devices, and testing season. Plan it with our summer refresh and technology projects team.

In practice

What this looks like on a school campus

Schools run on a calendar, a small staff, and a lot of devices. Here is how we can help with the practical details.

Staff accounts with MFA

Every staff login protected, with separate admin accounts and prompt removal when people leave.

Student devices enrolled and tracked with MDM

Chromebooks, iPads, or laptops enrolled under MDM, filtered where required, and assigned to a named student.

Vetted classroom apps

New apps checked against privacy terms and added to an approved list before teachers use them.

Separate networks for students, staff, guests and cameras

Segmented Wi-Fi and wired networks, so a guest device never shares a network with student records.

Summer refresh plan

Inventory in spring, orders by May, and work finished before teachers return.

Tested backups

Cloud email, drives, and on-site servers backed up, with restores tested.

Titan helps with the technical side of protecting student data. We do not give legal advice, and we do not certify compliance with FERPA, COPPA, CIPA, or Florida law. Your school and its counsel decide how those rules apply.

FAQ

School IT questions, answered

Does FERPA apply to a school's IT company?+

FERPA applies to the school. A school can share education records with an outside IT provider it treats as a "school official" when the provider does work the school would otherwise do, has a legitimate educational interest, and stays under the school's direct control for how records are used. A written agreement should say so. This is general information, not legal advice.

What IT does a small private school need?+

Secure staff accounts with MFA, MDM for student devices with filtering, Wi-Fi built for full classrooms, separate networks for cameras and guests, a process for vetting classroom apps, tested backups, and a summer refresh plan. The right size depends on enrollment and how many devices go home.

Do you manage student Chromebooks and iPads?+

Yes. We run MDM for school device fleets, including Chromebooks, iPads, and Windows laptops. That covers enrollment, apps and settings pushed centrally, content filtering where your school requires it, inventory by student, and lost-mode remote lock. Staff devices stay managed separately from student devices.
